Milano Lakes apartments nearing move-in

Work is moving ahead toward a move-in date this month for residents on all facets of construction at Milano Lakes, a new luxury apartment community off Collier Boulevard in South Naples.

"There is a great deal of activity throughout the community," said Gary Hains, vice president of FL Star Development, developers of Milano Lakes. "The landscaping in Phase I is nearing completion, the asphalt drives and the sidewalks are complete throughout the community, and the front entry is in place. We expect to receive the certificate of occupancy for the first two buildings soon."

According to Hains, the two completed buildings will soon be available for residents to move in, with reservations currently underway.

Residents have a choice of one-, two-, and three-bedroom designs with additional storage or a garage available for a fee. Each apartment home includes the convenience of laundry facilities, a master suite with a generous walk-in closet and dual sinks in the master bath, an island kitchen with a dining area, and a lanai.

Four floor plans range from a one-bedroom design with 808 air-conditioned square feet and 889 total square feet to a three-bedroom apartment with 1,439 air-conditioned square feet and a total of 1,545 square feet. Rental prices for the one-bedroom home begin at $1,400.

"The designs offer all of the convenience of a single-family home with excellent community amenities, plus Milano Lakes is located in one of the fastest growing areas of Naples," Hains said. "This is a prime location, with access to shopping, medical facilities and educational institutions as well as opportunities for outdoor recreation."

Designed as an active community, Milano Lakes amenities include a 5,488-square-foot clubhouse, which will be the centerpiece of social gatherings in the community. The interior was created by Design Group West and will include architectural ceiling detail upgrades, a custom designed entertainment wall and a resort-style pool deck complete with cabana stripe market umbrellas. A special feature is a built-in banquette seating detail for lounging and conversations around a full-size pool table. Facilities include a resort-style swimming pool and a fitness center. A children’s playground is planned to round out the amenities.

Milano Lakes is being developed by an affiliate of FL Star, a conglomerate of real estate entities led by Gary Hains and David E. Torres.

Other projects by FL Star include Sapphire Cove, a new community of single-family homes off Collier Boulevard in Naples, and Arrowhead Reserve, a community of single-family homes in Immokalee.

FL Star also provides management services for commercial and industrial buildings for real estate owners and condominium associations including maintenance, collection of rents and financial reporting.

Erickson: Decorating ideas to get you egg-cited for Easter

Easter soon will be here, with eggs of all colors and designs to brighten our homes. We like to try a variety of egg-decorating techniques, from the easy commercial dyes in a tablet to experimenting with natural dyes that we concoct with onion skins, tea and berries.

Many of the artistic memories live on in egg cartons stored away in the “Easter” box. They last because we blow out the contents of raw eggs and clean them before we decorate.

Like ornaments on a Christmas tree, the kid-decorated eggs come out annually. Full of memories, they’re lovely hanging from blossoming spring branches.

This year’s decorating technique is inspired by enduring spongeware pottery, popular in our country for centuries. The speckled look is super-easy to create, and it’s fun for the whole family to do together.

Color the eggs first in soft colors if you wish, or keep them natural, and then just dab, dab, dab a cheerful palette of non-toxic paints here and there with a sponge.

Here’s the stuff you’ll need:

Several eggs, blown or hard-boiled.
Non-toxic acrylic paint in favorite colors.
Recycled plastic lids or paper plates, one for each color.
Pieces of sponge, one for each color.
Spring-type clothespins or clips for sponge handles.
Egg cups.
Newspaper.

Here’s the fun: Working on a newspaper-covered surface, place an egg in an egg cup. Clip a sponge piece to a clothespin, and squeeze a puddle of paint onto a lid or plate.

Dip the sponge lightly in paint. Dab onto a piece of newspaper a few times, then lightly dab all over the top half of the egg. Let dry. Turn egg over and repeat on bottom half. Repeat with additional colors and eggs.

Hang decorated hollowed eggs from branches, or display them in a pretty bowl. If using boiled eggs, keep refrigerated until served.

How to “blow out” an egg: Poke a small hole with a large safety pin at each end of a washed raw egg. Carefully wiggle the pin or a toothpick into one of the holes to break the yolk.

Place a drinking straw over the hole on top, and blow through the straw, collecting the contents of the egg in a small dish. Rinse out the empty shell and let dry completely before decorating.

Storage: Clean egg cartons make good containers for neat stacking in a storage bin in your home.

Dying Easter eggs is a fun family tradition. Purchasing and using the pre-packaged dip and dye kits is a simple and inexpensive way to color eggs for the upcoming holiday. However, for those looking to shake things up and do something different this year, who want a way to make their eggs stand apart in the dozen, here are five easy alternatives to decorating Easter eggs this season.

Add texture

Grab a glue gun or some puffy paint and decorate the outside of the egg with dots, lines, swirls, circles, or even initials. Then use acrylic paints to color the egg. Accent colors and paint pens can be used on top of the base coat to highlight the textures and patterns, if desired, or keep them a single color, so the texture is easily visible.

Au natural

Keep that glue gun handy and cover the outside of the egg with natural and earthy materials for an outdoorsy effect. Dried moss is an easy to glue and apply option. Other ideas include flower petals, saw dust, twine, or even bark pieces.

Decoupage

This universal decoupage crafting supply can transform boring eggs into extraordinary eggs. Print patterns, detailed designs or even entire phrases. Use stickers, labels, or even photos. Select your design, glue it to the egg, then cover and seal with a layer of Modge Podge or other decoupage product.

Contemporary glitter

Combine the original beauty of white and brown eggs with a monochromatic glitter accent. Instead of dying the eggs bold and bright colors, use liquid glue and glitter in silver, pink, tan, bronze and gold to create a clean, modern and classical egg. Add polka dots, stripes, or cover just half the egg (bottom or side) in the matching colored glitter.

Silk transfer

Grab a few old silk ties (dad must have a few in the closet), cut the fabric into squares and tie tightly around the egg like a beggar’s purse, securing with a rubber band. Place in a pot of water and add vinegar, then boil and simmer for 40 minutes. Let cool and unwrap. The silk pattern will transfer onto the egg.

1. There is no dearth of space in this room and the designers play with a ‘less is more’ decor style. More than half of the floor is left empty; only minimal, straight-lined furniture is placed in one corner of the room. The brown wooden flooring further accentuates the vaulted ceiling in woodwork design. Add to that the abundance of natural light streaming in through the window and you have a bedroom that is a visual delight.

2. This eclectic bedroom is a gorgeous sum total of all its parts. Every element brings its own identity, yet it all comes together to create a good-looking bedroom. The repetition of colours in different spots helps bring together the design scheme. Similarly, blue is present on both the chairs and black is the colour of choice for the large furniture pieces – the bed and the wall cabinets. Grey walls provide the perfect base for the vibrant layout, and the floor-to-ceiling mirror creates a layered effect.

3. This bedroom by Malik Architecture has the luxury of amazing views, connecting the inner space with the wilderness outside. The accent wall of rugged stone provides a sharp contrast to the smoothness of the cement roof overhead and connects to the stone walls outside and the distant hills framed in the view.

The sliding glass doors used as a dividing wall keep the magnificent views visible at all times. The deep maroon of the traditional woven carpet and the soft brown of the TV unit infuse a sense of warmth to the room.

4. A private garden right outside and a library within – this master bedroom by Shibanee & Kamal Architects is in a league of its own. A stylish bed, headlined by a wooden 3D wall accent behind the bed and a rectangular ottoman with a woven surface, takes centre stage. The sliding doors ensure an unobstructed view of the greenery outside. A rich brown palette dominates the room’s decor and beautifully offsets the green of the garden.

5. Despite its high ceiling, this bedroom designed by Khosla Associatesgives a cottage-like vibe. Wood is the predominant material and contemporary furniture pieces have been used to impart a refined look. The colour scheme is subdued but not sombre, with darker shades of green, red and brown. Motifs are brought in through the traditional carpet and soft furnishings. However, the highlight of this room is definitely the L-shaped floor-to-ceiling corner window which gives a full view of the greenery outside and lets the sunlight pour into the room.

6. The Orange Lane celebrates the beauty of traditional materials in this bedroom by using elements like grey stone floors, mesh coverings on the doors as well as exposed brick work.

"Springtime is your chance to renew the spaces you live in and take them out of hibernation," says Karen Gray-Plaisted of Design Solutions KGP.

To help you ease into the new season, we've gathered nine gorgeous ways to upgrade your interior and exterior style. The best part? They're cheap and easy. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and bring some spring fling into your home.

1. Add cheery wallpaper

Quick and easy peel-and-stick wallpaper is ideal for spring, especially if you choose a joyful, bright print. Seek out lively patterns, including pink and green branches, pastel polka dots, or bird themes.

And if you're not sure you want to redo the entire room, put this temporary look on an accent wall. You'll still have a pop of springtime color, but with less commitment.

2. Display rustic birds' nests

What says "rejuvenation" more than the very structures that nurture life? Bring these natural elements inside by collecting old nests that you're certain aren't in use or by hitting up the crafts store for faux versions.

Place your nest collection under a glass cloche or fill it with fruit, flowers, or, as Easter approaches, colored eggs and bunnies.

3. Show off fresh flowers

Fresh flowers are a must this time of year.

"I love calla lilies, irises, and tulips in a bouquet placed in a nontypical spot such as your nightstand or bar cart," says Sara Chiarilli, an interior designer with Artful Conceptions in Tampa, FL.

And in the yard, look to pansies and azaleas.

"Azaleas [can act] as colorful and well-behaved foundation plants on the east side of your house, where they'll receive afternoon shade," recommends Matt Michaels of Lowe's.

"Pansies are a great springtime bloom because they're hardy in cold weather and come in an array of shades, many with bicolor faces," adds Rhianna Miller of RubberMulch. Plus, they thrive in both full sun and part shade and can be planted in pots, flower beds, and hanging baskets.

4. Change up your throw pillows

The beauty of a neutral couch is that you can change out your accessories with every season, Chiarilli notes. Pack away dark throw pillows and accent blankets, and go for lighter colors.

"If you live in a warm-toned house, pick yellows, soft pinks, and orange—and for cool tones, select light blues, greens, and silvers," she says.

5. Swap in brighter lampshades

Out with dark, tweedy toppers, and in with paler, more delicate shades. Pinks, lavenders, and lime greens herald the season, offering your living room a spring glow for not much money. Check out chain stores such as T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods, and Target for inexpensive lampshades for every room.

6. Switch to lightweight bedding

If you've been hibernating underneath dark, fuzzy throw blankets and heavy duvets, it's time to strip the bed! With warmer temps and brighter days on the horizon, consider lighter pastels for pillows and throw blankets.

"Rose quartz, for example, is the perfect springtime color, and it mixes beautifully with gray paint tones that have become so popular lately," Chiarilli says.

And remember, spring can bring on allergies. If you have special pillows and sheets (Allergy Asthma Technology makes hypoallergenic bedding), now's the time to bring them out, says Julie Coraccio, the home organizing expert at Reawaken Your Brilliance.

7. Display fragrant herbs and fruits

Spring is all about the green. Line up small pots of basil, thyme, and mint on your kitchen or laundry room windowsill, and breathe in the fresh, vernal scent.

Or pile bright green fruits such as Granny Smith apples, limes, pomelos, or Anjou pears into a bowl or shallow platter on the counter or dining room hutch.

8. Change your bathroom linens

A zippy new shower curtain is an easy spring upgrade—and it'll likely cost less than $30.

"And don't forget to change out your hand towels and candles," Chiarilli says. "It's so important that your home smell like spring when you walk through the door, so try jasmine, the perfect soft scent."

The entrance to your home deserves a little springtime love, too. Consider slapping a fresh coat of paint on your front door—and think vibrant spring colors such as a zesty coral, a tranquil aqua, or a bright lemon yellow.

"Get a new doormat, and add a pretty wreath or door basket with silk flowers and greens," Gray-Plaisted suggests.

If you live in a cooler climate, try putting cold-hardy bulbs in your outdoor planters and then adding one to each side of your door or garage. Voila—a fresh entryway that makes it clear spring has sprung at your house.
