Broadview Heights Tri-C students contribute to award-winning edition of "Breakwall": Talk of the Towns

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio - Melanie Costanzo and Sarah Halko of Broadview Heights are among the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C(r)) students who contributed to the award-winning 2017 edition of "Breakwall," the College's annual literary and photography magazine.

The current edition of "Breakwall" won the fourth-place best-in-show award at the National College Media Convention, an Associated College Press-sponsored event recently held in Dallas.

The peer-reviewed publication features prose, poetry, drama, photography and essays. Tri-C students from throughout Northeast Ohio contributed nearly 30 works to the current edition, the publication's eighth volume.

Costanzo served as a photography juror for the magazine, while Halko submitted three poems used in the publication.

The 2017 award is the third ACP award for "Breakwall" in its short history. The publication has become an important vehicle of creative expression for the Tri-C community.

Cross country champs: Taylor Badamo of North Royalton and Caroline Lapish led Tri-C while earning all-regional honors at the NJCAA Region XII Championship. Lapish finished seventh and Badamo 13th at the meet, held Saturday, Oct. 28, in Lansing, Michigan. The pair was followed by a tight pack of teammates, including Shelbie Sporcich (19th place), Sonnie Sauvinsky (25th) and Jordan Kati (30th).

Taylor Badamo of North Royalton led Tri-C to earn all-regional honors at the NJCAA Region XII Championship.  

The regional meet featured a strong field with four teams among the Top 25 in the nation. Tri-C was ranked 23rd in the country in the most recent poll by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Head coach Don Cox said that the team's average time qualified the Challengers for the National Junior College Athletic Association championship race, which will be held Nov. 11 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The team's top five runners at regionals all list Northeast Ohio hometowns. Lapish is from Eastlake, Badamo from North Royalton, Sporcich from Ashtabula, Sauvinsky from Rootstown and Katie from Eastlake. All are sophomores.

Shopping fundraiser: "Let's Go Shopping" fundraiser, sponsored by the St. Paul Ladies' Philoptochos, will take place Tues., Nov. 14, 6-9:00 p.m. This fundraiser will feature heavy appetizers, wine, dessert and coffee plus gift baskets, Chinese auction, and prizes. Vendors from all over northeast Ohio will be selling their wares including: 31 Bags, Authors Table, Personally Yours Monogramming, Kouklas Designs, Lipsense, Louloudas Shop, LuLaRoe, Red Wagon Marketplace, Olive Oil Scene, Pampered Chef, Rodan & Fields, Sentsy, The Bom Truffle Parties, Touchstone Crystal, Usborne Books, Young Living and more.

St. Paul Hellenic Center is located at 4548 Wallings Rd., North Royalton. Tickets are $25 at the door.

Holiday Craft Show: It's that time of year again when local crafters sell their beautiful handmade items. North Royalton High School PTA is sponsoring a Holiday Craft Show on Sat., Nov. 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. More than 175 crafters will be participating

with their handmade goods. There will also be concessions, raffles and free parking. Cost is $2 per person with children under age 5 free. North Royalton High School is located at 14713 Ridge Rd. Call 440-537-9062 for more information.

Holiday cards: Learn how to make holiday cards at the Independence Art Guild's Holiday Cards with Donna Payerly of Stampin' Up on Tues., Nov. 14 at Independence Old Town Hall, 6652 Brecksville Rd. from 7-9:00 p.m. Easy Thanksgiving and Christmas cards with coordinated and quality products will be demonstrated for participants to make.  Donna will introduce some tools to make the whole card making process fun and easy to do.  Cost for members is $3; non-members $5 with a supply fee of $5. For reservations contact Carol at 216-524-1045. Woodland inspired designs: The Chippewa Garden Club will present its annual Holiday Fundraiser Show titled "Woodland Inspired Holiday Trends" on Tues., Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Brecksville Community Center, 1 Community Dr.

This holiday show will feature florist Molly Taylor of Molly Taylor and Company from Hudson. Molly and her team will present new woodland inspired designs for the holiday season with fresh new holiday decorating ideas. Free refreshments and chances to win quality holiday raffle items will be available. Admission tickets are $10 each.

Proceeds from this fundraiser provide the many community projects that Chippewa Garden Club sponsors throughout the year, such as: providing over 500 pine seedlings on Arbor Day to third graders in all the Brecksville and Broadview Heights Schools as well as Assumption Academy; maintaining the herb garden at the Squire Rich Historical Museum in Brecksville; awarding scholarships to eligible horticulture students; providing garden and floral design related programs for children at the Brecksville library; providing garden therapy programs for seniors at a long-term care center; staging a Standard Flower Show biennially as a gift to the community; and establishing and mentoring community and school gardens.
