Cookbook sold at Dillard's benefits Ronald McDonald House

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The annual holiday Southern Living® cookbooks are now available for purchase at Dillard's until Dec. 31, 2017, to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Nevada. Proceeds from books sold from The Summit® mall Dillard’s in south Reno will go directly to the nonprofit to support its work to provide lodging for families who have a child receiving treatment at local hospitals. Books can be purchased for $10 at Dillard’s or online.

The special edition Southern Living cookbook is celebrating its ten-year anniversary and includes nearly 200 recipes and dozens of decorating ideas. Recipes are curated from Southern Living® magazine and vary from southern breakfast, appetizer, dinner, aperitif, and dessert.

“It’s hard to imagine but medical emergencies can happen to any family—usually without warning,” said Scott Smith, store manager at Dillard’s. “We want to be a partner in the effort to give these families comfort in stressful times. It’s so simple, too! Buying a thoughtful gift for someone who loves to bake or entertain, or for your own family not only saves you time, but also supports families going through crucial situations with their children.

In 2016, patrons of the Reno Dillard’s helped purchase enough cookbooks to allow the store to donate close to $3,000 to the Reno Ronald McDonald House®. That amount helped cover the cost of nearly 300 nights for guest families. On Dec. 2 at 2 p.m., Dillard’s will host an in-store cooking demonstration of recipes included in the cookbook. Whole Foods will provide coupons until supplies last to those who purchase cookbooks in stores that day.

“In the 30 years we’ve been here, we’ve been astonished by the impact food can have on families” said Marty Ozer, executive director of RMHC® Northern Nevada. “Just by purchasing the book and cooking a meal with your own family, you’re changing the dynamic for a family like yours. Without you, they’d not just be separated during the holidays—they’d be separated when their children needed them most. Together, we can use simple comfort to keep families close.”
