SWEET SUCCESS: 4-H holds first Cupcake Wars

December 31, 2017

On Dec. 16, eight teams from Nowata and Washington County 4-H competed in the first annual Cupcake Wars. The contest was open to any 4-H member in Nowata or Washington counties and took place at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Dewey.

Cupcake Wars? This fun new 4-H contest was started at the 2017 Oklahoma State Fair and Washington County 4-H decided to add it to their winter actives. Teams of 2-3 researched cupcake decorating ideas and tried to recreate them during the contest. Each team was given 30 minutes to decorate three cupcakes, display them and clean up their work station. Then they present their display to the panel of judges. During their presentation, the judges can ask questions such as nutrition facts, technique or anything they saw during the decorating.

Don't have a nightstand? 7 alternatives that work just as well

December 30, 2017

Be creative when figuring out what to use to store your stuff next to the bed.

Nothing is worse than having to get out of bed when you're finally about to fall asleep. But without a bedside table, where are you supposed to put that glass of water, alarm clock and nightlight? Well, we're all about thinking outside the box when it comes to decorating and utilizing unexpected items in your decor, and it doesn't hurt if they also prevent groggy, disruptive trips out of bed. After some thought, we came up a few furniture options for all your bedroom essentials that don't require a traditional nightstand.

Whether you don't want to invest in another piece of furniture, your space is too crowded or you're looking for new ways to spice it up in the bedroom (design-wise), you'll find a stylish solution in our list of nightstand alternatives. Read through the seven multifarious furniture items to get creative while still staying organized.

A DRESSER

Using a chest of drawers or a small dresser as a bedside table works wonderfully in both small and large bedrooms. The large proportions of a wide chest of drawers make spacious rooms feel cozier, and in smaller spaces, using a dresser as a nightstand reduces the need for another piece of furniture, thereby saving valuable square footage.

A SIDE CHAIR

Not just for dining rooms, a chic side chair is the perfect item to slide next to your bed for extra surface space while also making an unexpected statement. If the seat is flat and stable enough, you can treat it like a tabletop. Or place a tray on top for more stability. It's stylish, and you probably already have a chair that would work.

A CONSOLE TABLE

If you don't need closed storage next to your bed, utilize a simple console table as a nightstand. Open consoles lend a sense of airiness to a space and provide wonderful opportunities for styling. They work particularly well as nightstand alternatives in guest bedrooms where closed storage is not a priority.

A POUF

In vivid colors, a pouf is expressive enough to stand alone. It's decorative, functional, flexible, and easy to store. It can also fold out into a mattress, so it's ideal for anyone who has guests over a lot but doesn't have a guest room. Simply place a tray on top so your items have a solid surface to balance on.

A DESK

Another wonderful nightstand alternative, which works well in both large and small spaces, a desk as a nightstand is an unexpected way to incorporate multifunctional furniture into your bedroom. Choose a stylish chair to slide beneath the desk to add another layer to your design.

AN OTTOMAN OR STOOL

A low upholstered piece beside your bed introduces a soft element into a serene bedroom retreat. Store bedside essentials in a sturdy tray, which can easily be moved if you ever need additional seating or a place to perch while putting on your shoes.

A PEDESTAL

A pedestal or narrow stool is a great option if you want to give your space a unique, industrial-inspired twist but don't have much room. When you're not using it as a surface for your bedside items, let it give rise to pretty botanicals and other decorative objects in the foyer.

Describes the actions of the crew from the inclusion of a landing system and engines, the flight over the mountains to the spaceport, the orientation of the stars. Interestingly, the trajectory lies between their native planet astronauts Madoka and Earth passes between Jupiter and Mars. Also pointed out that “landing controls the deity

Top Home Decor Trends of 2018

December 29, 2017

Sure, sometimes it's acceptable to stick with what you love when it comes to home design, regardless of the latest trends. But if your humble abode is a bit tired of fashioning last season's tropical patterns and cliché word art, now's your chance to do some updating.

With a new year upon us, the inspiration is endless. And all those options can be a bit intimating. To help, we've gathered up a mix of expert advice and Pinterest's most popular decorating ideas to get you ahead of the design game. From bold colors and all-black kitchens to neutral shades and concrete where you'd least expect it, get ready to get inspired.

Happy decorating!

Black Is Back

Whether you're remodeling a sleek all-black kitchen or adding matte black fixtures in your spa-like bathroom, black is back and here to stay. "Black fixtures will take the place of brass as the new hot home hardware," predicts Ryan Brown of Brown Design Group in Southern California. Lucky for you, black is an effortless and timeless look that matches just about everything. (Not to mention it's much easier to clean than lighter metals!)

Curved Sofas

Curved sofas are a cool and comfortable way to make your living room a bit more homey while adding a touch of glamour. Open up the room with low, puffy, and plump shaped couches that are angled and designed for increased interaction during social gatherings, while also providing maximum comfort for relaxation or good old Netflix binging.

Light Wooden Flooring

Realtor.com suggests light-hued woods, including natural tones and blond and whitewashed wood as your newest flooring option for 2018. This will brighten any room of the house and hide imperfections more easily, making them a great choice for families and households with pets. Add some dimension and texture with herringbone-patterned woods to modernize the space and make a subtle statement.

Bold Statement

Jewel-toned walls, "Gen Z Yellow" sofas and scattered vibrant accents are all the rage this year. Don't believe it? Just ask pioneers in the paint industry, Pantone, who recently announced that the hottest color for 2018 will be the rich and regal Ultra Violet, and Sherwin-Williams, whose 2018 color of the year is an intense shade of blue-green. "As much as I love an all-white interior, rich jewel tones are making their way onto our walls and moldings in a big way—think 'English library,' but with peacock teal, black, or rich burnt orange colors," says Oregon-based interior designer Arlene Lord.

Concrete Accents

Concrete is popping up where we least expect it and we're definitely not mad about it. Ditch basic granite in favor of cool concrete incorporated not only on your kitchen countertops, but as fireplaces, bathtubs and accents walls, too. "I'm seeing entire walls in concrete panels that look fantastic juxtaposed next to antiques or contemporary furnishings," says designer, Ana Cummings.

Sage Touches

Warm and neutral colors are trending this year, according to Pinterest's top 100 trends for 2018, with sage softening up interiors as the newest neutral shade. The calming tone can easily cozy up a room, or inspire a rustic flair when painting kitchen cabinets or accent pieces throughout your home.

Metallic Mash Up

According to realtor.com, "A few years back, mixing metals was a total no-no. But experts now agree that today's homeowners want more than simple one or two copper or brass fixtures—they like seeing the stuff throughout a room or house." Metals mesh well with any color palette, but to really take your look to a new level, mix different finishes together like matte black, satin brass, black nickel, and non-lacquered brass.

Natural Materials

Get in touch with nature and add some natural elements to your design scheme this year. "In interior design we're seeing a strong push toward eco-consciousness—looking toward items that are made of sustainable materials and have a natural feel to them," says Ana Zuravliova, an interior designer at Roman Blinds Direct. Hammocks, daybeds, wicker and rattan furniture and greens galore will give your home a sustainable element with a modern edge.

Realtor view: Open house provides chance to attract buyers, get feedback

December 28, 2017

Most open houses are held to attract potential buyers. However, when your home is open to the public, anyone can stop by for a peek - even casual observers looking for decorating ideas. Your Realtor can help you decide if an open house is right for you and can walk you through the process.

Why hold an open house? It's an opportunity for you to market your home directly to potential buyers. Visitors can take their time walking from room to room and ask questions. This allows buyers to see the inside of the home in a way that you just can't get from photos or videos online. Hosting an open house is also a good opportunity for you to collect feedback about your home.

You can count on at least a few of the attendees to offer candid comments. Your Realtor can collect the information during the open house and share it with you afterward. You may even decide to make minor improvements or highlight amenities based on visitors' input.

An open house is very easy to host as long as you do the prep work. Your Realtor will recommend a day and time to host the event. Most public open houses are held for a few hours on weekend afternoons, but they may suggest hosting one mid-week so buyers can observe the area's school or rush-hour traffic patterns. Mid-week open houses are also a time to allow other Realtors to tour the home and determine if they may have a potential buyer.

An open house requires more marketing than just putting a sign in the front yard. Your Realtor's marketing plan may include advertising the open house in the classified section of the newspaper, on their website or other online media, and directional signage in the neighborhood.

It's important to help your home look its best before holding an open house. It requires a few steps:

Create curb appeal - The more appealing a property looks from the outside, the greater chance a potential buyer will choose to drop in.

Clean - First, put away anything that will distract buyers from the property, such as personal photos and other knick knacks. Second, scrub the house from top to bottom. Nothing is less appealing than a dirty home.

Freshen up - A little paint goes a long way to brighten a room. If you do paint, choose neutral colors. They are much more appealing to buyers.

Eliminate odors - Pets and cigarettes are the big ones. To alleviate the smells, deodorize upholstery and carpets.

Perform minor repairs - If you can fix it easily, do it. Check for squeaky doors, leaky faucets, faulty lights, etc. If you have repairs that require more work, talk to your Realtor to see if a repair is worth the cost.

Keep yourself and your belongings safe - Secure all your valuables, prescription medications and personal items before the open house.

Don't be surprised if your Realtor recommends that you be out of the house during the open house. While it may be tempting to stay, some buyers feel uncomfortable with you there while they open bedroom closets and kitchen drawers. Your Realtor will work on your behalf to field questions and point out the home's assets.

Talk to your Realtor to determine whether an open house should be part of their plan to market your home. In the meantime, visit HAR.com for information about real estate all across Texas.

I Do brings decorating, event rental service to Ripon

December 27, 2017

If it’s the kind of event that needs an extra flourish, chances are Cathy Rost and her business, I Do Decorating and Rental Service, has embellished it at one time or another.

“This last summer we actually decorated a funeral,” Rost said.

Certainly, the focus of I Do Decorating and Rental Service remains making weddings sparkle.

But since Rost purchased the business 21 years ago, it has grown leaps and bounds.

Whereas word-of-mouth would give her leads on maybe 15 weddings a year back then, now she annually decorates in excess of 130 nuptials, while also helping people with countless other events — ranging from quinceañeras (a celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday) to fund-raisers and more.

With such demand comes a need for more space as well. That’s what led I Do Decorating and Rental Service to open its first storefront at 646 E. Oshkosh St.

Christmas 2017: High-tech Christmas tree decoration ideas

You can implement high-tech Christmas tree decorating ideas in a number of fun and creative ways. Eschew the familiar tree model and erect a tree-like display made from screens, or litter your tree with gadgets

Going Wireless

Wireless Christmas trees strip away the hassle of plugging in lights and running extension cords all over your house. These types of trees prove difficult to find, though. Christmas lights and timers to recreate the wireless Christmas tree experience. Wireless decorations give your tree a high-tech look. Better yet, they make moving the Christmas tree to different spots in your living room a cinch, such as in households where you prefer to keep the tree near your TV but need to move it when guests come over to watch movies and sports. Add variety to your tree by inserting other wireless decorations such as glowing candles.

Gadget Tree

Arguably the easiest method of assembling and showing off your love of everything high-tech, the gadget tree takes the form of a regular artificial tree decked out with unorthodox decorations. Instead of bulbs and tinsel, string up old CDs, floppy disks, cell phones, cameras, and any other gizmos and gadgets too ancient to hold a place of honor on your desk or in your pocket. Top off your tree with a pair of headphones or a motherboard from an old computer. In place of garland, string together a few dozen USB flash drives and loop them around the body of your tree. Work the decorations around traditional lights, which should reflect off of the shiny exteriors of CDs and DVDs.

Fiber Optic Trees

Striking a nice balance between high-tech and tradition, fiber optic Christmas trees contain optical fibers that light up, saving you the expense of buying lights and the headache involved in finding the one bad bulb that causes all the rest to go dark. Fiber optic trees provide lots of display options. Whereas most lights only exhibit a small selection of lighting modes such as all-on or blinking, many manufacturers program fiber optic trees with a plethora of display modes.

Stack of Screens: Certainly one of the more expensive high-tech Christmas tree decorating ideas out there, a stack of screens involves assembling a tower of computer monitors and setting them to the same display. Each screen depicts a specific part of a large Christmas tree. You can mount the screens to walls in a rough approximation of a Christmas tree, then tear them down and return them to their workstations after the holidays. Try to find at least half a dozen screens for best results, and use LCDs rather than LEDs to keep costs low.

Alamogordo shines bright for Christmas

December 23, 2017

Here are some of the best Christmas displays in town. Wochit

ALAMOGORDO — It’s the most wonderful time of year again in Alamogordo and residents are getting in the spirit by showing off their festive Christmas displays.

For Hector Saldana, living in the southwest leads to some unique decorating ideas. Instead of making a snowman out of snow, Saldana’s snowless snowman is constructed from tumbleweeds.

Saldana said he got the idea while living in northern New Mexico several years ago and wanted to bring the tradition down to southern New Mexico.

“We lived in northern New Mexico about 15 years ago, they build tumbleweed snowmen there every year,” Saldana said. “My wife said why don’t we build one down here and I said sure, why not.

“It took us about an hour to collect the tumbleweeds from around Alamogordo and three hours putting it together because I had to paint it,” Saldana said. “I’m from the southwest, so cactus plants and tumbleweeds are my buddies, all this cowboy stuff. I feel right at home with this. All the neighbors and passersby love it, they give us a thumbs up when they drive by.”

Saldana said every day is his favorite holiday.

“I love all holidays, not just Christmas,” he said. “I’m a great believer in the Lord and to me every day is his birthday. So all holidays are special to me.”

Saldana welcomes residents to get a glimpse of his tumbleweed snowman at 1210 Paiute Trail.

Christmas village

Sharon Jensen, who lives at 3211 Summer Ave., has been collecting original Department 56 Snow Village houses and accessories for over 30 years and has turned her garage into what she calls a Christmas village.

From every corner of Jensen’s garage, a Department 56 collector’s piece lies in sight. There is so much detail, residents have to take a second look.

Jensen said her collection started off with about 12 houses. Then, family and friends would gift her more pieces for Christmas. She now has over 300 Department 56 Snow Village houses and accessories.

“The kids started getting them for me for Christmas, some of them are 30 years old,” Jensen said.

Jensen’s grandson, Leo Torres, helped set up the Christmas village and said it was a family tradition.

“We haven’t set it up for the past four years because my grandma has been sick but we decided to do it this year for the kids,” Torres said.

Jensen said Christmas is her favorite holiday because she still feels like a kid at heart. She said she welcomes the community to come see the Christmas village from 6 to 9 p.m. until New Year's.

Christmas lights

Several residents have also set up impressive Christmas light displays. One neighborhood in particular is the 400 block of Cuba in front of Alamogordo High School.

Dozens of other neighborhoods also have their homes aglow illuminating the Christmas spirit this year.

400 Cuba Ave.

This iconic Christmas home is adorned with lights and figurines everywhere the eye can see. Hundreds of residents flock to this home and drive by slowly to take a good look. This home, owned by the Ortega family, is also known for Santa Claus handing out candy to children on Christmas Eve.

402 Cuba Ave.

Right next door to the Ortega home. this home is also known for its Christmas lights display, and makes the Cuba block shine bright as ever.

1303 Mountain View

Right around the corner from Cuba Avenue, is a magical winter wonderland. This home invites residents to walk through the yard and take photos of its elaborate, festive Christmas display.

1353 McKinley Ave.

If you drive down Scenic Drive, surely you won’t miss this eye catching “A Charlie Brown Christmas”-themed house. Adorned with giant inflatable Peanuts characters, this house is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face.

'They win:' Davenport man 'admits defeat' to his neighbor's Christmas decorations

December 23, 2017

A few days before Thanksgiving, Jake Klipsch looked out the window of his central Davenport house to find a striking sight.

His neighbor was already putting up Christmas lights.

“Come on,” Klipsch thought. “I haven’t even finished raking the leaves.”

It was the latest material for an ongoing inside joke within Klipsch’s household: He could never keep up with his neighbor’s Christmas decorations.

“Every year, less and less of my stuff gets up and his house keeps getting better,” Klipsch said. “I could only try to hang in with him.”

In the past, Klipsch has limited the friendly rivalry to comments to his wife and three children, such as “Look at that, Gary has done it again.”

This season, he did anything but keep it a secret.

'I give up'

On a jog through his central Davenport neighborhood, Klipsch’s mind was running through Christmas decorating ideas. He thought: “How many years can I put the lights in the exact same place? How can I make my house stand out?”

And, just like that, a new -- more minimalist -- strategy popped into his head.

“I was thinking, ‘I give up, you win,’” Klipsch said.

He decided to proclaim that thought to anyone who passed by his family’s home.

“I remember the moment well,” he said. “I ran home and I told my wife, ‘I got to start doing this now.’”

Klipsch drove to a nearby hardware store to pick up the necessary supplies, including a 4-foot piece of plywood and a string of white Christmas lights.

Klipsch then got to work in his backyard, sketching out the letters "meticulously duct taping” lights in place.

The finished product: A small sign emblazoned with the words “They Win” and an arrow pointing to his neighbor’s house.

The next night, he revealed his sign to the world, but not before clearing it with Shocker.

“The night before he put the sign up, he comes over and he goes, ‘I’m not here to get you angry,’” Shocker said.

Shocker’s reaction?

“I just laughed. We’re not in competition or anything like that,” he said. “It’s just a funny thing.”

'How does he do it?'

Klipsch, a Davenport native, and his wife, Leslie, moved into their house in 2007 after living for a few years in a small Chicago apartment, where there “was not much of an opportunity to be creative.”

With their own house and front yard, Klipsch said he finally had an outlet for his festive decorating ideas. He littered their space with lights, even if it meant climbing 15 feet up onto the roof.

“I went a little Griswold, initially,” he said, referencing the popular “National Lampoon's Vacation” holiday movie series featuring a family known for their own over-the-top Christmas celebrations. “I was dedicated for the first few years, for sure.”

Over the years, it became “more of a chore.”

It didn’t seem that way for Shocker, however.

“His house is always the star of the street,” Klipsch said. “He’s one of those neighbors that is much better at making his house and yard always look beautiful. I'm always like, 'How does he do it?'”

Shocker said he has enjoyed decorating his house each Christmas season for the 16 years he has lived there.

On one hand, Shocker said 1900s houses such as his “scream for attention.”

“Just the way these houses are built and designed,” he said, “they just need to be decorated up this time of year.”

Shocker, who is retired, also said he takes “pride” in getting the lights up.

“It fills my holiday spirit,” he said.

'Going viral'

A few days after Thanksgiving, Klipsch posted a photo of the “They Win” sign on Facebook and wrote: “My neighbor, Gary, always has the best Christmas light displays. I can’t keep up. This year, I just decided to admit defeat.”

He ended the post with a special hashtag: #merryxmasgary.

More than 180 people “liked” the post.

“This wins the Internet,” wrote one commenter.

News of the festive sign reached beyond Klipsch’s Facebook friends.

Over the next week, Klipsch, who is the principal at Mid City High School, said several of his coworkers had seen photos of his house via separate posts on social media and told him, “You’re kind of going viral.”

“I was surprised other people had found it,” he said. “It’s way more of a response than I thought.”

Klipsch has an idea of why the post resonated with so many.

“Maybe it’s’ a situation others have dealt with,” he said. “You see these amazing houses and you’re jokingly like, how do they keep up with it?”

Williamson woman decorates nearly 30 Christmas trees inside home

December 23, 2017
CLOSE

Nashville's Cheekwood Estates and Gardens has illuminated its gardens with one million holiday lights throughout the mile-long walking path. Shelly Mays

The late journalist B. C. Forbes wrote, “Christmas is a tonic for our souls. It moves us to think of others rather than of ourselves. It directs our thoughts to giving.”

The “tonic” of Christmas flows freely in the home of Kim Temple Lynch. The “empty nest” mother of three decorates nearly 30 trees inside the Arrington home she shares with her husband Dan.

Cooper Jones, Lynch's four-year-old grandson, loaned her the wings from his Buzz Lightyear costume for the special Buzz Lightyear-themed tree she decorated just for him.

Lynch attributes her enchantment with Christmas to a unique melding of her family’s and her husband’s family’s holiday traditions and styles.

The high school sweethearts lived within a few miles of one another in their hometown of Amarillo, Texas.

“Dan’s mom [the late Peggy Lynch] made Christmas really fun. Every Christmas Eve, Peggy or one of her sisters would host [the family’s] Christmas party. The sisters shared their collection of Spode Christmas dishes,” Lynch said. “There’d be initials on the back of all the dishes so they’d remember whose was whose.”

At the end of the festive evening, the “Christmas pie” would make its appearance. Lynch doesn’t know why it was called a pie when in actuality it was a large hatbox. However, the “pie” contained small gifts for each guest and when the host brought it out it meant it was time to go home.

“The Lynch side of the family had a ‘more is more’ mentality about Christmas,” she said.

Kim’s mother, Wilma Falke Temple, took a more moderate approach.

“Every year, my mom would decorate her flocked Christmas tree with blue ball ornaments while my brother and I were at school. It was all very orderly and neat—each ornament was place with precision and care,” she said.

Lynch’s parents’ parents all lived in Kansas. They’d visit them each Christmas.

“My mom’s mom [Regina Falke] had an amazing aluminum Christmas tree with the color wheel that I could watch forever. What I would give for that piece of Americana!”

Lynch said that when it came to her other grandmother, Martha Temple,  “there was no rhyme or reason to anything but it was so happy and festive…. And there was always a lot of eggnog, which might be the explanation for that!”

Lynch said that Christmas is her “happy place.”

Throughout the year, she takes notes and keeps lists of new decorating ideas to implement.

Whereas a hobby like hers could get expensive, most her trees were either purchased at thrift stores or gifted to her by people who were discarding theirs.

It’s what she does with the trees that make them special.

“Every tree means something. It’s like a walk through our family,” she said.

Each tree in a row of trees displayed atop the entertainment center represents the members of her immediate family.

There’s a sports themed tree for her sports fanatic son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lillian Lynch, a Texas A&M themed tree for her Aggie-loving son Austin and a Harry Potter themed tree for his fiancée, Taylor Thompson.

The tree that represents her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Cory Jones, dons three especially significant ornaments this year. The ornaments are cloth dolls—a  doll to represent the Jones’s son Cooper and two dolls (a boy and a girl) to represent the child or children they are in the process of adopting from Haiti. The process is slow and arduous. They do not yet know if they will be matched with one child or two siblings.

“We are already researching Haitian Christmas traditions to incorporate into our family’s traditions,” Lynch said.

Lynch’s favorite tree is displayed in her kitchen/breakfast area. From its limbs hang years and year’s worth of the family’s childhood handmade ornaments–including one Dan made when he was three-years old.

Some of the other trees include a beach-themed tree filled with sand dollars Lynch collected in Florida, a Texas-themed tree representing their home state, a tree Cory made from a shipping pallet and a travel-themed tree with ornaments they’ve collected on their journeys abroad.

Lynch also collects nativity sets.

“I try to have one nativity set per tree,” she said.

Among her favorites are an heirloom nativity she inherited, a hand-carved nativity they purchased while traveling in Italy and a marble set she purchased while on a missions trip in Nicaragua.

“See, everything means something to me. I think about the people and the memories as I decorate,” Lynch said.

Charles Dickens said, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all year.”

Lynch’s thoughtfully and festively bedecked home reflects the spirit of Christmas that is always with her.

She’ll happily provide a home for any orphaned ornaments, trees and decorations.
