It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Embarrass

EMBARRASS – An old-fashioned Christmas will be shared at the Nelimark Museum in Embarrass. On the second weekend of December—Friday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 9–the theme presented in the house vintage-decorated across from Timber Hall on Hwy. 21 in Embarrass will be “Birches, Berries and Boughs.” White birch swags will surround the windows and red berries will be accented on green pine, spruce and cedar boughs in and on the old house windows and doors.

On Friday, the smell of fresh-baked sweet breads and candies will permeate the atmosphere as people from the surrounding communities come out for coffee or cider and the opportunity to gather together with their neighbors for pleasant conversation, laughter and catching up before the holidays overwhelm. Artisans from the community will display their creations for Christmas decorating ideas and present gifts for children and family members alike.

Like the idea of warm woolen mittens to keep your hands from freezing, or a cheerful handcrafted apron to wear for preparing your Christmas dinner? If you get there early on Friday there might be some left to choose from. Want to stock up on homemade fudge or braided and sugared Christmas pulla for the holidays? Friday is the day to shop starting at 10 a.m.

Want to get in on the Christmas sale of unique collectible items from yesteryear? This is the weekend to come out. Everything in the upstairs “mercantile room” will be offered at a discount.

There will be unique Finnish glassware items and wonderful homemade soaps and scents to choose from, as well as sauna items to choose in the sauna room. Colorful hand-loomed rugs may still be available on Saturday. Items (too many to list here) will be looking for your stockings hanging on the hearth or waiting to be put under your family tree for that someone who really appreciates them. You might even find the socks hanging.

Re-purposed and original wood signs will be spelled out on the walls of the old house. You can find one-of-a-kind children’s games, dolls, jewelry and hanging decorations for sale.

Surprise, surprise… Food items won’t last long. On Friday the homestead kitchen will be overflowing with fresh baked bread: artisan breads, cinnamon creations, frosted and flakey krinkle, rye bread, flat bread, and torts and pies of all kinds.

Open at 10 a.m. sharp on both days, with a 4 p.m. closing. It’s only two days: Friday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 9. Destination: Nelimark Museum in Embarrass.

Ron Sutton lives in Embarrass, MN. He is a retired educator, member of Sisu and an artisan from the Finnish museum.
